Courtney Shanade Salter, also called Ari Lennox, a Washington, D.C.-based American singer/songwriter, was signed as Dreamville Records' the first artist of female gender with Dreamville Records by J. Cole. In October of 2016, Ari Lennox released her debut EP Pho. This was the moment that she was recognized. Shea Butter Baby released her debut studio album on 7 May 2019. Cole had her send her songs for the Dreamville Team later in the year, as he wanted Rihanna to work alongside her on some of the songs. She officially was signed with Dreamville Records on 8 December. Backseat, a track she performed alongside Cozz on her Revenge of the Dreamers II collaboration album. The 21st of October, 2016, the EP Pho debuted. Ari Lennox then appeared as the opening act on behalf of J. Cole on his song Change in 2017, and appeared on the 4 Your Eyez Only Tour. The year 2018 saw Ari Lennox appeared on two tracks with EarthGang, on Nothing but the Best, and Bas On Icarus. Ari Lennox, on the 16th of July 2018 she released her debut single "Whipped Cream" from Shea Butter Baby. The music video for it came out on the 5th. She released her second single called Grampa on the 9th of November. In November 2013, she released No One, and Pedigree. Shea Butter Baby is a track that she recorded alongside Cole for Creed II's soundtrack on 16 November. The track was released as a standalone single in February 2019, to coincide with her debut album. In February of 2019, the video music for the song was released. It has had over 3 million YouTube views in just one week. As a supporting act she performed in concert with 6LACK in December of 2018 for the From East Atlanta With Love Tour.
